NuNorthern Soul has long supported rising talents, offering opportunities to producers whose output has, for one reason or another, previously been overlooked. The label’s latest album release continues this trend, delivering a stunning debut album from ambient, IDM and downtempo explorer Lowhitey.

Since making his debut on Seattle imprint Hush Hush in 2014, the Polish producer – real name Wojciech Misiak – has released just two EPs, both of which caught the attention of NuNorthern Soul founder Phil Cooper. From those brief aural glimpses it was clear Misiak had talent; Fantazmat, his debut full-length excursion, confirms the Pole’s position as an ambient producer on the rise.

From start to finish, the set is breathtakingly beautiful. Rich in chiming synthesizer melodies, fluid lead lines, dreamy chords and sunrise-ready soundscapes, its’ 12 tracks echo with glassy-eyed intent and a becalmed, loved-up sense of comforting warmth.

Highlights are plentiful from start to finish. Check, for example, the gentle beats, intergalactic melodies and hazy effects of “Merzemie Senne”, a cut that wouldn’t sound out of place on one of Warp’s legendary “Artificial Intelligence” compilations or Aphex Twin’s second “Selected Ambient Works” LP. Then there’s “Monika”, an unrepentantly gorgeous chunk sun-bright bliss that wraps Jonny Nash style guitar parts around lilting synth melodies and bubbly two-step beats, and the similarly picturesque “Space Between Thoughts”, whose alien electronics and backwards melodies are both pleasingly trippy and sonically pure.

Where Misiak really excels, though, is in creating ambient music of breathtaking beauty. Fantazmat is full to bursting with spine-tingling examples, from the drifting pads, vintage new age synth melodies and gentle guitars of “Oda Do Natury”, and the blissfully Balearic warmth of “Deep Inside”, to the timeless, beat-free rush of “Nothing Hurts Anymore” and the Vangelis-style brilliance of “Complete Freedom”. These are stunning moments amongst many on a debut album that lingers in the memory long after it finishes playing.
