about

So far in 2019, NuNorthern Soul has handed label debuts to a trio of fast-rising talents from the worldwide Balearic scene. The Ibiza-inspired imprint’s latest single offers up another label debut, this time from an outfit whose releases have been setting tongues wagging in recent years: Grecian duo Bonnie & Klein.

The pair first caught the attention of Balearic and nu-disco DJs via their first outing on Is It Balearic? offshoot Uber in 2014. Since then, they’ve gone on to showcase their seductive, sun-kissed wares on a string of much-loved imprints, including Leng, Music For Dreams and Balearic Social Recordings.

Bonnie & Klein are in fine form on their first NuNorthern Soul outing, which sees them vault becalmed Mediterranean seas via a trio of vibrant, all-action workouts that mix tactile, floor-friendly grooves with layered synthesizer motifs, attractive electronic flourishes and all manner of sunset-inspired instrumentation.

The Hellenic duo begins in confident fashion with “A Moment”, where synthesized marimba-style motifs, chiming electronics and smile-inducing riffs jauntily dance atop a warm, undulating bassline and shuffling mid-tempo drums. The track’s giddy positivity seemingly multiplies as it progresses, leaving dancers pie-eyed and gleaming.

There’s a deeper and dreamier feel to superb title track “Ocean Leap”, whose bubbly melodic motifs and synthesizer panpipe flourishes offer subtle nods towards 1980s Greek new-age electronic composers such as Vangelis Katsoulis amd Dimitris Petsatakis. Bonnie & Klein’s synthesizer-heavy melodiousness comes accompanied by dub disco strength bass and undulating, off-kilter drums, but retains the rush-inducing bliss associated with the pioneering work of their Greek predecessors.

Dubby, delay-laden machine drums are the order of the day on the EP’s closing cut, a sunrise inspired chunk of Balearic synth-pop goodness entitled “One Morning”. This picturesque and cheery number is propelled forwards by mood-enhancing chord sequences, sweeping synth-strings, gently pulsing pads and the kind of shimmering, ear-catching lead lines that wouldn’t have sounded out place on timeless Pet Shop Boys albums such as “Behaviour” and “Actually”. Whack it on when you wake up and we guarantee it will help you start your day with a spring in your step.
