Impeccable digging to find this true gem guys. Slide guitar sounding in parts like Pink Floyd on the opening track draws you in to wonderful simplistic listen reminding me of younger years. Great find.

Mike Welch's self-penned and privately pressed 1981 album, "Renovations," stands as a hidden gem in the musical landscape. Born out of Welch's experiences growing up amid the 1960s British invasion and navigating the local music scene, the album reflects his journey through life and love. The name "Renovations" draws inspiration from Welch's simultaneous musical and physical reconstruction of a 200-year-old Massachusetts house. A beacon of hope and emotion, the album transcends its status as a lost curiosity, delivering a rich tapestry of acoustic guitar, pedal steel, and mesmerising melodies.
Welch's musical journey began with The Beau Brines, a group inspired by the British invasion, performing alongside legendary acts like The Animals. Later rebranded as Expressway South, the band continued to evolve, leaving behind a 45 and memories of opening for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. As life unfolded, Welch pursued his own interests and, during the 1970s Massachusetts music scene, balanced his day job with performances at venues like The Cellar Lounge and The Crystal Palace. It was amidst renovating a run-down house that Welch crafted the songs for "Renovations," drawing inspiration from diverse influences such as Orpheus, Jim Croce, and James Taylor.
The album, recorded at the coveted H.T. Recording Studios in Dennis, Massachusetts, features a talented ensemble of musicians, including Lewis Binky Anderson, Bruce Colegrove, and country legend Earl Blanc. Songs like the opening track, "Colorado Country Girl," strike a delicate balance between breezy folk and soft rock, offering a quintessential American road trip with a nostalgic country twang. The album is a testament to Welch's ability to seamlessly blend topics of love, high school memories, and economic hardships, all while maintaining an air of optimism. "Renovations" is a journey through Welch's working-class roots and surroundings, resonating with listeners through its reflective songwriting and tight musicianship. With its recent reissue, the album's essential charm has found a new audience, making it a must-have for enthusiasts of private press rarities.
Fans of JIM's 2023 album, "Love Makes Magic," will find a kindred spirit in Mike Welch's "Renovations." Both albums share a commitment to pushing musical boundaries and offer an enticing choice for those captivated by innovative soundscapes and emotive storytelling. The album has been lovingly remastered by Simon Mills aka One Half of Bent.
